There are provided a pattern identification method and identification device capable of reducing the processing load to reduce the processing cost as well as reducing the device cost and size when performing identification of an object including a circular object by employing a method using an optical image. On output data based on the image data obtained by imaging the pattern on the surface of an object (coin, bill) (step S503), a selection window is arranged as a particular selection area on the surface of the object (step S505). By using the total value of the output data in the selection area, the feature amount of the image data is extracted (steps S506 to S509) and the pattern on the surface of the object is identified (steps S510 to S512).
