PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a steering device for a vehicle. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the method for operating the steering device (10) and the steering device (10) for the vehicle having a steering actuator (12) for setting a steering angle to a steered wheel (11) and a steering wheel (14) mechanically disconnectable from the steering actuator during operation without external disturbance. A nominal steering angle is determined based on operation of the steering wheel (14), and is set to the wheel (11). During the operation of the device without external disturbance, at least one variable describing movement characteristic in the lateral direction of the vehicle is considered when the nominal steering angle is determined. Influence of the external disturbance acting in the lateral direction with respect to a traveling direction is also determined based on the variable describing the movement characteristic in the lateral direction of the vehicle or an evaluation variable derived therefrom.
