A liquid crystal composition containing at least one compound selected from compounds of formula (1) and formula (2) as a first component, at least one compound selected from compounds of formula (3) as a second component, and at least one compound selected from compounds of formula (4) as a third component: wherein R<1 >is alkyl; R<2 >is alkyl or alkenyl; Z<1 >and Z<2 >are independently a single bond or -(CH2)2-; X<1 >is hydrogen or fluorine; and Y<1 >is fluorine or -OCF3. Also provided is a liquid crystal display element containing the composition.
