1,197,545. Positive clutches; clutch-brake combinations; change speed gearings; detent brakes. EATON AXLES Ltd. 18 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 60246/68. Headings F2C, F2D, F2E and F2L. A synchronizer for a two-speed gear comprises a pair of internally toothed rings 61, 62, Fig. 3, which are relatively rotatable between a first position in which the teeth are aligned and a second position in which they are not aligned. A spring 73, Fig. 2, urges the teeth into the aligned position and a spring 72 acts as a dragring when the rings are housed in a clutch 33, Fig. 1, and a brake 55. A manually slidable sun gear 50 has teeth 51 which are shown in engagement with teeth 56 on the brake 55, and is moved to the left to engage teeth 52 with teeth 34 of the clutch 33 and disengage teeth 51 from the brake. When the teeth on the sun gear initially engage the synchronizer rings the drag produced by the spring 72 causes the internal teeth to move to the non-aligned position. As the sun gear teeth become synchronized with either the brake or clutch teeth the spring 72 realigns the teeth in the rings 61, 62 and the gear change may be effected. |
