In apparatus comprising a head having a reading surface interrupted by a plurality of passage means, a flexible reading element slidably movable on said surface and having channel means adapted to interconnect two of said passage means, said head has opposed surfaces, one of which surfaces has cover means constituting the reading surfaces, and a groove formed in said one surface is sealed; by said cover means and leads-from one of said' passage means via another passage means, com- 'municating with the other of said surfaces, to fluid operated means carried by said other surface. A circular plate 21 has one face 23 covered by a sheet 63 formed with a radial row 62 of apertures. Apertures 25, 28, 30, 32 therein are connected by passages through plate 21 to respective nipples projecting from the other face 22 (not, shown) of plate 21. Apertures 48, 50, 52 are connected by respective grooves 56, 57, 58 in surface 23 to passages 27, 29, 31 in plate 21 communicating with respective.nipples on surface 22 .The aforesaid nipples are connected to vacuum-operated apparatus such as valves or switches. Apertures 45, 49, 51, 53 are connected by grooves 59 in surface 23 to a passage-26 in plate 21 communicating with a nipple on face 21, said nipple being connected to: a vacuum pump. Apertures 46 and 54 are connected by respective grooves 60, 61 in surface 23 to passages 47, 55 in plate 21 communicating with respective depressions 82, 83 in surface 22. Each depression is covered by a resilient diaphragm adapted; on evacuation of said depression, to actuate a switch. A circular plate, journalled on a shaft 78 carried by plate 21, is spring-biased against sheet 63 and is rotatable by means of an electric motor .carried by plate 21. A sheet carried by the rotatable plate to engage sheet 63 is formed with radial grooves adapted to interconnect adjacent ones of the apertures in row 62, and is also formed with apertures adapted to be aligned with any one of the apertures in row 62. The arrangement is thereby such that on rotation of said plate, said valves and switches are actuated for controlling the operating cycle of a washing machine as described in the parent Specification
