PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a scale with high precision, to suppress influence on an image, and to form a color image of high picture quality. SOLUTION: An unillustrated scale is stuck on the whole inner peripheral surface of an endless belt type intermediate transfer body 12 and a scale read sensor 71 is provided as a scale read means of reading the scale. The scale read sensor 71 is provided within a range 75 of contacting a photoreceptor 40 wherein a swing of the intermediate transfer body 10 is restrained. The scale is read while the intermediate transfer body 10 has no play, and a signal is sent to a feedback control system.
