PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface sizing agent for offset printing paper for imparting excellent offset printability to acidic paper and weakly acidic paper. SOLUTION: The surface sizing agent for offset printing paper contains an alkali saponification product (A) of a diisobutylene maleic acid resin and an alkali saponification product (B) of a substituted succinic acid in the solid weight ratio of (A):(B) of 90:10-30:70.
