Polymeric materials are stabilized against deterioration due to ultra-violet light by a N,N,N1,N1-tetra C1- 8 alkyl or aryl phosphordiamidothioic acid or a C2- 24 alkyl, aryl or aralkyl ester thereof. Specified polymeric materials are polymers of ethylene, propylene, 3-methylbutene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, pentene-1, 3,3 - dimethylbutene - 1, 4,4 - dimethylbutene-1, octene-1, decene-1, styrene, isobutylene, isoprene, butadiene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile; unsaturated polyesters, e.g. derived from glycols and maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic and aconitic, optionally together with phthalic, adipic, azelaic, tetrachlorophthalic, sebacic, suberic, endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic and hexachloroendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic acids, and optionally a cross-linking monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyltoluene, dimethyl styrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butadiene, cyclopentadiene, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, alkyl allyl diglycolates and diallylphenylphosphonate; and polyesters derived from ether glycols and dicarboxylic acids or from glycerol and phthalic acid. Many suitable stabilizers are listed and examples describe stabilized polymer compositions comprising tetramethylphosphorodiamidothioic acid and (1) polypropylene, (2) polyethylene, (3) polyvinyl chloride, (4) an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene terpolymer and (5) an unsaturated polyester, styrene and benzoyl peroxide which is cured in a mould of glass plates. |
