摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition which maintains book-shelf structure, has an improved liquid crystal temperature range and controlled temperature dependence (change of layer structure after low-temperature hysteresis) of layer structure. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a naphthalene compound represented by formula (1) (R<SB>11</SB>and R<SB>12</SB>are each a 1-24C alkyl group or the like; Y<SB>11</SB>is a single bond or an -O- group; Y<SB>12</SB>is a -COO- group, a -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>- group or the like; X<SB>11</SB>and X<SB>12</SB>are each H or a halogen atom; n is 0 or 1) and a dimer-type liquid crystalline compound represented by formula (2) (m and m' are each an integer of 1-20; Y<SB>1</SB>is a single bond, an -O- group, a -COO- group or the like; Y<SB>2</SB>is an -O- group, a -COO- group or the like; Ar<SB>1</SB>and Ar<SB>2</SB>are each a 1,4-phenylene group, a 2,6-naphthylene group or a 4,4'-biphenylene group; Z<SB>1</SB>is a -COO- group, a -CH<SB>2</SB>O- group, a -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>- group or a -C≡C- group or the like).
