A procedure for topology recognition or identification and path-guidance of data packets in a packet-switching ring with several network nodes, in which each network node periodically generates a topology packet in which it enters its operating state and its identification number, and then the topology packet passes to the next network node which enters/registers its identification number and forwards it until the complete topology packet enters again at the packet-generating network node, where it is evaluated and on the basis of the number of registered network nodes, the ring is divided by halving this number into two identical logic ring parts, so that the data packets from each network node are forwarded to their respective target network node, via the smallest number of intermediate network nodes.
