PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has a high S/N ratio at a high density which is essential to the achievement of a higher density, and a magnetic recording/reproducing device which has a large capacity and a large access speed. SOLUTION: A thin-film magnetic recording medium having at least one magnetic layer formed on a non magnetic substrate has a squareness ratio of a recording direction of 0.8 or higher to 1 or lower, and the absolute value of a standard noise coefficient per unit transition equal to or lower than 2.5×10<SP>-8</SP>(μVrms)(inch)(μm)<SP>0.5</SP>/(μVpp).
