PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain good image quality while effectively securing transfer efficiency. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus where an image formed on an image forming carrier 1 is transferred to a recording material 3 via an intermediate transfer body 2, one of the image forming carrier 1 and the intermediate transfer body 2 is formed to a drum-like one, and the other is formed to a belt-like one so as to be stretched over several stretch rolls 4, and the belt-like member is arranged in contact with the drum-like member in a prescribed area along the outline of the drum-like member, and also, the contact area (m) between the both is arranged so as to be equal to or exceeding the circumferential length of a roll 4a having the smallest diameter among the rolls 4 for the belt-like intermediate transfer body 2 or the image forming carrier 1, and in the contact area (m), one or several transfer members 5 are arranged facing a part other than both ends A and B, and also, a peel time potential rise checking electrode 6 for checking the potential rise at the peeling of the intermediate transfer body 2 is arranged at the downstream end B in the contact area (m).
