<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a great amount of unburnt HC is exhausted when an engine 1 is started by first igniting fuel previously supplied in a combustion chamber 16 of a cylinder 12 in an expansion stroke during stopping the engine. <P>SOLUTION: This automatic stop/start control device for the engine comprises a HC adsorbing catalyst 35A arranged in an exhaust passage 34 extending from the combustion chamber 16. When a HC adsorbing material therein is being capable of adsorbing HC, the temperature of the HC adsorbing catalyst 35A is lowered during stopping the engine for increasing the efficiency of adsorbing unburnt HC, and when the HC adsorbing material is being incapable of adsorbing the HC, the temperature of the HC adsorbing catalyst 35A is prohibited from being lowered for decomposing and purifying the unburnt HC with catalytic reaction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
