PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent each member forming a gap between a charging member and an image carrier from moving over a step formed at the corresponding end of the charging member, thereby preventing deterioration of the member, and to prevent discharge from occurring at each end of the charging member in the axial direction of the charging member. SOLUTION: The charging device includes gap retention members 103 which engage annular grooves 105 in both ends of a charging roller 14 for charging the image carrier and forms a gap between the charging roller 14 and the image carrier. The annular grooves 105 each have such a depth that both ends of the groove in the shaft direction D of the charging roller 14 are deeper than the middle of the groove. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
