PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle surrounding monitoring device capable of preventing misdetection and misnotification. SOLUTION: An image processing ECU 20 acquires reference image information and comparison image information from a camera 10, and applies image processing to these images. The ECU 20 extracts a changing region changing for the reference image information on the comparison image information, and estimates the uniformity of density of this image region. The ECU 20 compares the uniformity of the density of the changing region which has been estimated with a predetermined value, and determines whether the changing region is an object itself or a shadow of the object. If the changing region is the object itself, the object is superimposed and displayed on a monitor 70 with a mark, and a speaker 70 notifies the presence of the object. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
