PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for effectively relaxing thermal stress in a region between an intake port and an exhaust port, namely, in an area between IN-EX valves on an engine cylinder head having a cooling water channel passing through a mating portion of a cylinder block. SOLUTION: The cylinder head 30 has water holes 37, 38 passing through the mating portion of the cylinder block 20. The water holes 37, 38 communicate cooling water passages 35, 36 formed in the cylinder head 30 with a cooling water passage 21 formed in the cylinder block 20. On a lower face 30a of the cylinder head, an approximately ring-shaped heat shielding plate 40 is provided to encircle the water holes 37, 38. The heat shielding plate 40 shields or suppresses heat transmission between cooling water distributing in the water holes 37, 38 and a region around the water holes 37, 38.
