PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base material for a mortar wall and a mortar wall construction method for preventing the generation of large cracks having a risk that rainwater or the like enters a building. SOLUTION: A lath material 3 laid on one bed sheet 2 is parted into four partitions smaller than the bed sheet 2 laid substantially in a checkerboard pattern. The upper and lower and right and left adjacent lath materials 3, 3 are laid and arranged so that the short mesh width direction of a through hole 3a of one lath material 3 intersects perpendicularly to the short mesh width direction of a through hole 3a of the other lath material 3. A little gap W is provided between the adjacent lath materials 3, 3, whereby edges of the lath materials 3, 3 are separated from each other to prevent overlapping.
