A serial interface engine (SIE) (612) encodes/decodes signals received from an universal serial bus (USB). A address/endpoint management mechanism which does not have functions of transceiver (611) and engine, has terminals respectively connected to engine and non-universal serial bus interfaces connecting function devices to serial bus through microprocessor (710). Independent claims are included for the following: (1) address/endpoint management circuitry; (2) universal serial bus (USB) host connection method; (3) virtual hub implementation method; and (4) universal serial bus compound device implementing method.
