PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diamine compound suitably usable as a light-emitting material for organic electroluminescent devices. SOLUTION: The new diamine compound represented by the general formula(1) and/or (1') is provided. The organic electroluminescent device low in driving voltage, long in light emission life and high in durability is such that at least one layer containing at least one kind of the diamine compound is sandwiched between a pair of electrodes. In the above formula(1) and/or (1'), Ar<SB>1</SB>, Ar<SB>2</SB>, Ar<SB>4</SB>, Ar<SB>5</SB>and Ar<SB>6</SB>are each a (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon group or (substituted) aromatic heterocyclic group, wherein Ar<SB>1</SB>and Ar<SB>2</SB>and/or Ar<SB>5</SB>and Ar<SB>6</SB>may be bound to each other to form a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring each; R is H, cyano, a halogen atom, (substituted) straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl, (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon group or (substituted) aromatic heterocyclic group; and X and Ar<SB>3</SB>are each a bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon group or bivalent aromatic heterocyclic group.
