PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a case of a paper separating element in a paper feeder. SOLUTION: The paper separating element 3 for receiving paper edges is comprised of a hollow friction member housing part 5 integrally formed in a base part 2 and a friction member 36 housed in the friction member housing part 5. The friction member 36 is inserted from an insertion opening 52 in the lower side of the friction member housing part 5. A protrusion 41 of the friction member 36 is exposed from a slit-like opening 52 formed on a top plate 51 of the friction member housing part 5. Depending on the size of openings 57 of the top plate 51 that are formed after a forming die to form a bottom plate 54 of the friction member housing part 5 is pulled out, the size of the surface area of the top plate 51 is adjusted.
