A digital amplifier for amplifying an input digital signal includes a sound-volume adjusting section for controlling the volume of the digital signal and a gain adjusting section for performing gain adjustment by applying compression characteristics to the digital signal subjected to volume control by the sound-volume adjusting section. Furthermore, the gain adjusting section performs calculation based on an expression y=a{1-1(1-[x])<n>} in order to apply compression characteristics to the input digital signal x, which is converted to the output signal y.
