AN APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PARALLEL CALCULATION OF AN ERROR CODE SYNDROME

An apparatus and method for parallel calculation of the syndrome(SO) of an error correcting code, in particular a Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquengbem code. The apparatus includes a plurality of syndrome calculators(200) capable of calculating concurrently a plurality of syndrome coefficients(s0,s1). Each syndrome calculator calculates the syndrome coefficient using polynomial division, namely, computing the reminder of the division of an input word by the minimal polynomial of an element a &cir& nj(460) in the Galois field GF(2 &cir& m). The resultant reminder is evaluated at a &cir& nj. This parallel syndrome calculator implementation is particularly suitable for decoding data transmitted at high line rate networks, such as an optical transport networks.
