PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water soluble resin suitable for various uses, capable of shortening polymerization time, and also reducing the residual amount of a monomer and an undissolved portion. SOLUTION: This method for producing the water soluble resin by polymerizing a monomer component of essentially an ethylenically unsaturated monomer by using a photopolymerizable compound is characterized by simultaneously using the photopolymerizable compound having≥1×10<SP>3</SP>ml/g×cm absorbance with the photopolymerizable compound having≤1×10<SP>2</SP>ml/g×cm absorbance at 365 nm wavelength in a methanol solution, and containing≤0.1 mass % ratio of the photopolymerizable compounds to the total monomer components.
