A valve tappet (10) for a combustion engine comprises a gas carbon nitride steel upper surface (11) having micro pits formed by irradiation of the surface. The surface roughness is from 0.8 to 2.0 microns, the mean diameter of the pit is from 0.01 to 0.05 mm and the density of pits is 10-20 mm-2. An Independent claim is also included for a production process for the above.
