<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a sulfonated polyarylene that is safe and enables easy control of the amount and position of sulfonic groups introduced in the polymer; to provide the sulfonated polyarylene; to provide a polyarylene and an aromatic sulfonate derivative that are suitably employed in the production method; and to provide a macromolecular solid electrolyte that comprises the sulfonated polyarylene, and a proton conductive membrane. <P>SOLUTION: The aromatic sulfonate derivative is represented by formula (1) [wherein, X is a halogen atom except fluorine, -OSO<SB>3</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>or -OSO<SB>3</SB>CF<SB>3</SB>; Y is a divalent organic group; A is -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>- or -(CF<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>- (m is an integer of 1-10); and R is a 4-20C hydrocarbon group].
