PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically select a device driver software based on the kind of an optical disk and the access attribute by avoiding an access error at an optical disk drive due to the erroneous recognition of the kind of the optical disk, the access attribution and the direction of a recording surface by a user. SOLUTION: Before housing the optical disk 4 in an optical disk housing shelf 5 in library equipment, the kind of an individual disk and the direction of the recording surface (single surface/both surfaces) are discriminated by discrimination holes 3a to 3d bored at a tray 3 for placing the optical disk. Thereafter, while carrying and housing the optical disk to the optical disk housing shelf and while carrying it from the optical disk housing shelf to the optical disk drive in the state of placing the optical disk on the tray 3, the presence/absence (opening/closing) of the holes at the tray 3 and the presence/absence of a light transmitting part in the periphery of the center hole of the optical disk are detected by an optical sensor 2 (using an LED light emitting and receiving element) fitted to an optical disk carrying mechanism 1 to obtain class information of the optical disk and information on the direction of the recording surface.
