PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a magnetic tape which has high archive-characteristic, from which high output is obtained, and of which running durability and running stability are excellent. SOLUTION: This medium has such constitution that a magnetic layer 2 is formed directly on a plastic substrate 1. The magnetic layer 2 consists of a maghemite thin film including cobalt in which content of cobalt is 1∼10 weight %, a protection layer 3 of film thickness 5∼15 nm is formed on the magnetic layer 2, and average roughness SRa of the center plane of a magnetic layer forming plane is made 0.5∼2.0 nm.
