PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the light penalty of a disk array subsystem. SOLUTION: A disk system has master interfaces for two channels, with one of the channels connected to a controller and the other connected between a plurality of disk systems. A data disk system reads old data on a recording media, performs an exclusive OR operation coming from the controller to obtain temporary parity data, and transfers the data from the other channel to a parity disk. A parity disk system reads the old parity data on the recording media, performs an exclusive OR operation with the temporary parity data, and writes the result as new parity data. Since a parity data updating process usually carried out by the disk array controller is carried out off-line, data-writing performance as seen from the host computer is increased.
