It is intended to provide a protein having an activity of synthesizing a dipeptide other than L-Ala-L-Ala; a protein for synthesizing the dipeptide; a process for producing the protein having the activity of synthesizing the dipeptide; a process for producing the dipeptide using the protein having the activity of synthesizing the dipeptide or the protein for synthesizing the dipeptide; and a process for producing the dipeptide using, as an enzyme source, a culture of a microorganism capable of producing the protein having the activity of synthesizing the dipeptide or the protein for synthesizing the dipeptide or the like.
