A steel mill roller, for use in sheet pickling solutions, tin plating &c., comprises a metal core 12, a layer of hard reinforced plastics, and a rubber or synthetic rubber cover 16. As shown, a protective layer of reinforced plastics 13, hard, rigid, mineral acid resistant and cut or crack growth non-propagating and of “ to # inch thickness, is formed on the metal core by winding thereon fibrous glass rovings, woven tapes or fabrics, or other fibrous materials such as nylon, asbestos or mineral wool, soaked in acid-resistant polyester or phenolic resin, or melamine, or a resin based on Bisphenol A, the layer then being surface ground with a 0À002 inch/inch longitudinal taper. The layer 13 covers any acid throw rings forming part of the core and leaves only the roller journals clear. The cover 16 is preformed by winding, to a 1/16 to # inch thickness, the same reinforced plastics as the layer 13 on a mandrel having the same taper as said layer to provide a lining 18, applying to said lining a thin coat of cement, building on calendered rubber or synthetic rubber to provide a sleeve 19 of ¢ to 1 inch thickness, winding webbing around the covered mandrel, vulcanizing, surface grinding, end trimming, and removing the cover from the mandrel. To mount the cover on the core, the latter is suspended above the cover vertically positioned, both larger diameter ends uppermost, a reservoir-forming collar (21) is temporarily mounted on the cover upper end, and, as the core is slowly lowered into the cover, a quantity of the same resin as used to make the layer 13 and the lining 18 is continuously poured into the mouth of the collar. After trimming-off in a lathe a light coating of waxcontaining resin is applied to all exposed portions of the reinforced resin. To re-cover a roller thus formed, it is necessary merely to strip the damaged cover 16, re-grind the thus exposed surface of the layer 13, and apply a new cover 16. For light use, the layer 13 may be dispensed with and the lined cover 16 held on the cover by end clamps. |
