A user wishing to access a service on a computer system enters a generic user name and password. The service then receives a request to establish a user name and password for the user at the service and generates a token for the user by manipulating the generic user name and password. The token may be generated by a hash function, which could include the server identification. The token may be in the form of printable characters and may be passed to the service as a valid user name. The generic password may be sent with the token to the service. The server id may be the URL or the internet protocol address. The method may be executed by an applet, a plug-in web browser, a proxy, a servlet or by a script. |
