The damping device (10) has a cylinder (12) in which a piston (14) can be displaced longitudinally. There are overflow apertures (34, 38) or channels (24) in the piston or cylinder. The throttle cross section of the overflow apertures or channels can be altered, dependent on the displacement position of the piston, so that alternating damping and braking characteristics are provided during the damping or braking stroke.
