Visual detection of proteins (I), associated with transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), in the eyes of live animals or humans. Visual detection of proteins (I), associated with transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), in the eyes of live animals or humans comprises: (1) administering to the eye, by instillation, from a swab, invasively or by other methods, a diagnostic agent (A) in physiological saline or other suitable formulation; (2) optionally administering (similarly) a second antibody for signal amplification; and (3) visualizing labeled agent bound in and on the eye, using a device, e.g. light source such as a laser, appropriate for the fluorophore, dye and/or enzyme used as label, and analysis by an optical measurement system (camera, spectrophotometer or fluorimeter). (A) is an antibody (or Fab fragment), aptamer and/or low molecular weight compound, labeled with a dye, fluorescent dye and/or enzyme, optionally using a second fluorophore- and/or enzyme-labeled antibody and/or a secondary antibody for signal amplification.
