PURPOSE: Provided is an extract of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. which involves the activity of lowering the blood sugar, and is well adapted for use in treating the diseases related to diabetes, and in making food additives. CONSTITUTION: A method of manufacturing the extract of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. comprises the steps of: extracting Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. at 0-100 deg.C with a solvent selected from water, polar organic solvent or a mixture thereof; removing the solid component from the extracted solution through centrifuging or filtering; and removing the extracting solvent from the extracted solution, followed by purifying it. The polar organic solvent is short chain alcohol with C1-C4.
