The present invention relates to a low air loss mattress 10 for continuously supporting a person lying thereon, comprising an upper layer 12 of inflatable cells, and a separate lower layer of inflatable cells 13. The lower layer of inflatable cells 13 is always maintained at a constant higher pressure than the upper layer of cells 12 to prevent a person lying on the mattress 10 from contacting the underlying support surface, in particular, when sitting or during transport.
