The method involves applying a definite tension to an endless abrasive belt (6) to drive the belt. An active portion of the belt is supported in a region running against an edge of a laminated pane, with a movable support unit (19) in an edge direction. The bending of the active portion (6a) is limited by applying a definite tension to the support unit for pressing the portion with a definite working pressure against the edge.
