PURPOSE: A device and a method for recognizing an iris are provided to minimize the inconvenience of a targeted person, and a wrong recognition ratio due to a position of the camera and the target person by actively picturing/recognizing a face and the iris of the target person through one camera. CONSTITUTION: A distance measurer(70) measures a distant to the target person and transmits a measured value to a controller(90). The camera(10) pictures a face image and an iris image of the target person, and transmits the pictured image to the controller. A wide-angle lens(20) fixed to the camera makes the camera picture the face image by focusing the face of the target person. A close-up lens(30) makes the camera picture the iris image by moving to a position agreed with a focus of the wide-angle lens. A driving part(31) moves the close-up lens to a range not affecting a wide-angle of the wide lens if the camera pictures the face image, and moves the close-up lens to the position agreed with the focus of the wide-angle lens and the close-up lens if the camera pictures the iris image. A tilt part(40) moves the camera upward/downward.
