PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide device and method for controlling a paper feeding device capable of coping with an abnormal case as much as possible by absorbing dispersion of paper feeding time and expanding a range for making a leading end of a sheet in order. SOLUTION: In a control device 80 of the paper feeding device, a control circuit obtains an external signal to freely control starting/stopping, speed and acceleration of each motor. The control device 80 is provided with a function 84A to control intermediate speed of a lateral conveying roll 38 corresponding to time when a sheet reaches from a paper feeding start to the lateral conveying sensor 40, and a control function 84B to temporarily stop the lateral conveying roll 38 when time when the sheet reaches the lateral conveying sensor 40 from the paper feeding start is extremely short.
