[Class 8 (ii).] Air is separated into oxygen and nitrogen in a double rectification column 1, 2, the nitrogen from the first stage rectifier being taken as a gas without expansion to the heating coil 6 of a third rectifier 3 producing argon from a mixture of oxygen and argon taken through a pipe 4 from the second column at a point where the oxygen content amounts to 90-98 per cent. The nitrogen from the first-stage rectifier after passing through the coil 6 is expanded into the condenser 9 of the argon rectifier.
