<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object recognition device and recognition method capable of easily and surely recognizing a vehicle, walker or the like in front of a vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: A frame image of the front of the vehicle concerned is acquired by a CCD camera (S1), and an object candidate area including an image of a forward vehicle or the like is extracted from the frame image (S2). A cutout plane is successively moved along Z-axis that is the advancing direction of the vehicle to derive the overlapping area of the cutout plane with the object candidate area (S3). A matching distance is calculated on the basis of the overlapping area and each reference image in a memory (S4). The position in Z-axis of the cutout plane where the matching distance is minimum is determined, and the Z-axial position at that time is set as the optimum position of cutting out (S5).
