<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of performing lean combustion, and generating less nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas. <P>SOLUTION: This engine includes a cylinder 142, a piston 144, and a first fuel injection portion 15 which can inject fuel into a combustion chamber 150. The piston 144 includes a plurality of recessed portions 144p provided at its top 144h and a groove portion 144q provided so as to face a position of the first fuel injection portion 15 from the recessed portions 144p. The first fuel injection portion 15 injects at least part of the fuel burnt in one cycle toward the recessed portions 144p or the groove portion 144q. Part of the fuel is injected toward the recessed portions 144p, and then scattered to form a mixture. The other part of the fuel stays in the recessed portions 144p, and is vaporized later than part of the fuel forming the mixture to form a mixture with higher concentration than the one already formed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
