<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monotone picture display device in which a display color in low gray scale display does not turn into a chromatic color and high-quality picture display is produced. <P>SOLUTION: The monotone picture display device is provided with a structure which has an array substrate 1 with specified circuit elements disposed thereon, a counter substrate 2 placed opposite to the array substrate 1 and a liquid crystal layer 3 sealed in between the array and counter substrates 1, 2. A backlight unit 4 is disposed on the lower side of the array substrate 1 and is structured so as to make white light be inputted from the backlight unit 4 to the liquid crystal layer 3. Also on respective outer surfaces of the array and counter substrates 1, 2 opposite to the surfaces in contact with the liquid crystal layer 3, polarizing plates 5, 6 are disposed so as to make their planes of polarization mutually perpendicularly intersect. Furthermore, a selective scattering layer 8 is disposed between the liquid crystal layer 3 and the counter substrate 2 and outputs a complementary color of the chromatic color generated due to polarizing plate structures in the low gray scale display.
