<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical switch having a long life and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: An organic dye film 14 and an oxide film 16 which transmits light in the wavelength region entering the organic dye film when the element is used as an optical switch are formed in this order on a substrate 12. By forming the oxide film on the organic dye film, the life of the optical switch is extended because the organic dye film is not directly in contact with air or water.
