PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image processor capable of reducing an image data size while maintaining the quality of an original image. SOLUTION: In a copying machine being the image processor for processing image data, the original image is divided into a plurality of areas (S2), character recognition processing that recognizes characters from divided images of the plurality of areas is carried out (S3), the plurality of areas are divided into a low certainty area with low certainty and a high certainty area with high certainty on the basis of certainty information being character recognition results, and the original image is compressed in accordance with the divided low certainty area or high certainty area (S5). This makes it possible, for example, to compress only an image in the low certainty area, to lower the quality of an image in the high certainty area to compress the image, or the like. In addition, this makes it possible to store the image in the high certainty area with a character code so that the image data size can be reduced while maintaining the quality of the original image.
