PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable-beam-pattern broadcasting satellite that can obtain a rainfall attenuation compensating radiation pattern when a local rainfall occurs in its service area, by accurately grasping the radio wave attenuation in the service area and controlling the phase shifting amount and attenuation of signals supplied to each elemental antenna constituting a broadcasting phased array antenna, based on the grasped radio wave attenuation, and, when the attitude of the satellite changes, can obtain a radiation pattern which uniformly corrects the radiating direction by the changed amount of the attitude. SOLUTION: This variable-beam-pattern broadcasting satellite is provided with an array antenna 9 which receives radio waves simultaneously transmitted from a plurality of ground transmitting stations installed in the service area, a means 10 for measuring the received power received by the array antenna 9 at every transmitting station by using a method of estimating arriving direction with high resolution, and a means for finding the attenuation distribution of the radio waves by comparing the measured received power with the calculated value of received power based on circuit design or received power 11 in a rainfall attenuation-free state at every plural transmitting stations. This satellite is also provided with a means 13 which controls the phase shifting amount and attenuation of the signals supplied to each elemental antenna constituting the broadcasting phased array antenna 12.
