PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and an image processor for determining a type of an original in detail, and to provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming apparatus each provided with the image processor, and a computer program. SOLUTION: A dot line determination section 41 of an original type automatic determination section 4 determines whether or not a dot area exists in input image data, a dot number calculation section 47 obtains the number of dot lines in the dot area when the section 41 determines the existence of the dot area, and a determination section 46 determines the type of the original depending on the obtained number of dot lines. When the original is determined to be e.g., a newspaper or the like, background processing is performed and plain paper is selected, when the original is determined to be a book, a magazine, or a pamphlet or the like, black generation under color elimination processing and gradation reproduction processing are performed, and plain paper, mat paper, or gloss paper is selected, and when determined to be art print or a photo formed on photographic paper or the like, the black generation under color elimination processing and the gradation reproduction processing are performed, and gloss paper is selected.
