PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the utilization efficiency of illuminating light without causing the complication of a device constitution and the troublesomeness of manufacture in a picture display device equipped with a non-emitting reflection type spatial optical modulation element, an illuminator for illuminating the reflection type spatial optical modulation element and a projection lens. SOLUTION: Light from a light source 2 passes through 1st and 2nd fly-eye integrators 9 and 10 so as to illuminate the reflection type spatial optical modulation elements 14 and 15. Unnecessary light which is not modulated is reflected by the elements 14 and 15, and further reflected by a reflector 4 so as to be reutilized. By deviating the integrators 9 and 10 from an optical axis, the utilization efficiency of the light is improved and uneven illumination is prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
