PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide display elements having a high degree of whiteness of the ground and having, as display material, of a materials of which color changes by electrochemical oxidation and reduction, and to provide a display device using it. SOLUTION: The display element is formed by laminating a first transparent electrode controlled with a drive element, a polymer solid electrolyte containing a coloring agent and metal ions, and a second electrode in this order. The coloring agent consists of a powder of at least one inorganic compound selected from among titanium oxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide and aluminum oxide treating a surface with a hydrophobic agent.
