PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat seal device in a packaging machine capable of shortening a time required for a seal width changing work, preventing degradation of the operation efficiency of the packaging machine, and changing the seal width. SOLUTION: When sub heat sealer units 8 and 28 occupy advancement positions A and A' by a working mechanism 27, sub seal surfaces 15b and 35b are made flush with main seal surfaces 9b and 29b, and perform heat seal over an extensive range of a packaging film F. When the sub heat sealer units 8 and 28 are retracted to retraction positions B and B', the sub seal surfaces 15b and 35b are retracted from the main seal surfaces 9b and 29b, only the main seal surfaces 9b and 29b perform heat seal on the packaging film F.
