A coal cutting machine has a cutting head (1) pulled by an endless chain drive (7) and supported on a guide track over the chain guides. The top of the cutting head is fitted with additional cutters (8, 13) and is braced by an overhead frame (9) with the rear end supported by a jointed frame (11) on a guide track (16) over the edge of the conveyor tray (4). The invention has the overhead frame supported on the guide track by two sliders straddling the jointed frame with the slider spacing similar to length of each section of conveyor tray thereby reducing vibration and noise resulting from misalignment between adjoining tray sections.
